This nice property is set in a small and picturesque rural town just 20km from the regional centre Shumen and close to historic place connected with the glorious days of the First Bulgarian Kingdom. Besides Shumen, there are three distinguished archaeological sites nearby to justify a visit: the ruins of Pliska – the capital of the First Kingdom, the remains of Veliki Preslav – Tsar Simeon made it his capital, and the Madara Horseman – a mysterious bas-relief dating back to the C3 BC and representing a horseman whose mount is trampling a lion with the assistance of a greyhound, while he holds the reigns in one hand and a wine-cup in the other. The Horseman is carved into the rock-face at a height of 95m, and various G reek inscriptions next to the carving provide ambiguous cluesto its age: in fact some scholars believe that the horseman was carved far earlier than the oldest inscription, recording a debt owed by Emperor Justinian to Khan Tervel. The figure, they argue, represents the nameless deity of the Thracians, and is of Thracian or Getae origin, the inscriptions merely evidence that it was later appropriated by Bulgarian rulers. Leading off to the right of the stairway to the horseman-viewing platform, another path winds off to the Large Cave (Golyamata Peshtera) beneath a giant overhang of rock. Various finds from here – Thracian votive plaques, amphorae bearing the stamp of Thasos, Roman candlesticks and Proto-Bulgarian ceramics – are now exhibited in the Museum beside the Road passing the Madara complex, and the cool, moss-streaked cave serves as the venue for the Madara Music Days in June and July.
