Albena is one of the purposely-built resorts on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast and has an uniform and unique architectural style. The town is located close to other tourist, cultural and commercial centers and in the same time remains within well-preserved natural surroundings. During Romania's administration, the Balchik Palace was the favorite summer residence of Queen Marie of Romania and her immediate family. The town is the site of Marie's Oriental villa, the place where her heart was kept, in accordance with her last wishes. Today, the town is one of Bulgaria’s top 100 national tourist spots, famous for its Palace and the adjacent Botanical Garden, which holds the world’s second largest cactus collection (after Monaco). Currently, two 18-hole golf courses are being developed around town.
