This is the smallest town in Bulgaria, with population of about 250. The town is surrounded in a valley by impressive terrestrial pyramids. The town attracts lots of Bulgarian and foreign tourists with its pyramids shining, golden-yellow, whimsical, shaped on the background of magnificent Pirin mountain. Apart from the unique natural surroundings, the town also boasts for the fascinating architecture of its old Melnik houses, most of which were built during the Bulgarian Renaissance to testify for the grandeur and richness of the commercial hub with 25,000 inhabitants, which Melnik once used to be.It has been declared a historical and a cultural reserve and a museum- town. Today this pretty town is among the most attractive places for tourism.There is a spa resort near the town and it is really close the Rojen monastery. But these are things that we know very well. What we don’t know about this town are the secrets of the past. Every year archaeological researches take place around Melnik. This year doesn’t make an exception. This town has survived 23 centuries on its place that’s why it is a very interesting object of research. Two of the oldest bells in Europe were found in Melnik. They date back to 13th century. The “Pantanasa” Monastery is also researched. It had functioned to the beginning of the 20th century but it is a ruin now. It was built in 13th century too. Few tourists have heard of it, no matter its mural paintings are of European importance. Many foreign archaeologists show interest in Melnik. Its authenticity attracts many people. But the town has also been popular as a wine-growing region since l346. The famous Melnik wine had been brought here from Syria in ancient times. Today it is popular in many countries and wins many awards. This year it has a bronze medal and honorary diploma from the national exhibition of wines “Winery 2006”.
