Klissura is famous among Bulgarians mostly with its heroic share in the April uprising and its tragic fate after the uprising’s defeat. This is far from everything that one need to know about this lovely sub-Balkan town, which is the first jewel in the geographic necklace, called “the Rose valley”. The latter stretches from Klissura to Kazanlak and is well known for its  rose oil, which has made Bulgaria famous all over the world.
     Klissura is the Western door to the Rose valley, as well as to the Stremska valley that also starts from here. In the past, the town has been about 4 km to the West from its current location, precisely under the Koznica nature site. In the sixteenth century the town shifted to its current location and has changed its name several times over the centuries.
    As is the case with all mountainous passes, the location has key strategic importance and this helps explain some of the features in the mentality in Klissura people. Accustomed to the hard conditions of life in the mountains, they are tough, proud and brave people, loving above all their independence and freedom.
The Chervenakovi house was the first house built after the town’s fire in 1876. In 1986 the Chervenakova house was turned into the “Museum of Potatoes”, which is the only one of its kind in the Balkans. From that moment on the people of Klissura celebrate the Day of Potatoes every year, as potatoes have been their important business for many years and because the potatoes are said to be the most delicious in the whole country.
It is also a starting point for the Central Balkan National Park, Vejen Peak in Balkan Range Mountain, Bogdan Peak in Middle Forest Mountain, the tomb in Starosel and the historic area Zle dol. It is also a popular area for climbing and bungee jumps.
 As a whole Klissura is a a beautiful area which attracts many tourists and people-lovers of nature.
