An investment project will be implemented by Perelik Sports and Tourist Centre.
The project envisages construction of an integrated system of winter and summer sports facilities, mountain accommodations and improvement of the infrastructure and spatial development in the land-use areas of Smolyan and the villages around it (all in the Rhodope Mountains).
The new resort will have 55 km of ski runs, ski facilities, snow guns, 25 ski lift lines, shelters and cafeterias, ski equipment rental, indoor parking, recreation, sports and amusement spots, as well as hotels and vacation apartments.
Infrastructure would be built mainly on deforested and denuded land, and mostly in the lower-altitude parts. The company will plant 35-40 per cent more trees than it will have to remove when laying the future state-of-the-art ski runs.
The project is financed by the company shareholders, which are Bulgarian and international financial institutions. Capital expenditures are planned at 255 million euro.
The state would have to invest heavily in the construction of roads reaching the future resort in Smolyan Region.

Sixteen km to the north, up above the town is one of the biggest Bulgarian winter resorts – Pamporovo. Ten km west of the centre of the town is the region of the Smolyan lakes, known as the “emerald eyes of the Rhodope Mountain. They totaled 20 in number, but presently there are only 7 lakes. The largest one of them –the so-called “clear lake”- is also the deepest and the most beautiful. The Smolyan waterfall is 20 meters high and is in the immediate surroundings southwest of the town. There are some 20 caves in the vicinity of the village, the most interesting of them being the Uhlovitsa cave characterized by its miraculous cascade lakes at a distance of 3 km east of the village. The cave is easily accessible. There are many other landmarks in this beautiful region.
Smolyan has a great potential for developing the tourism in the region, which is proved by the huge investments made in this area.
