Making Peshtera centre of tourism is among the priorities in the Regional Development Plan for the next year. There are facilities for winter sports including towing lifts and ski-runs. There are a large number of private holiday homes in the resort. The municipality is a traditional organizer of mountain motor races. The Peshtera Mountain Motor Race is conducted as part of the national championship. Some interesting tourist routes have also been made.
The natural landmarks and the places of interest in Peshtera are a good condition for the development of tourism. Peshtera is an ancient settlement, which is testified to by a number of archaeological findings. The name of the town of Peshtera (meaning ‘cave’ in Bulgarian) is believed to come from the large number of caves in the neighbourhood, including one of the most beautiful in Bulgaria – Snezhanka (Snowwhite). The old part of the town of Peshtera preserves several houses dating back to the Bulgarian Renaissance period, a mosque and a clock-tower, the latter being a stone building of the 17th c. To the south of Peshtera, a road with numerous U-curves leads to the remains of a Thracian fortress, the so-called Kiev’s Fortress (Kievoto Kale). In the neighbourhood of Kiev’s Fortress, one can visit the Kupena natural reserve and the Blue Waterfalls of the Gizditsa river. The waterfalls are extraordinarily beautiful, with the highest of them falling down from 15m.
Different projects also help for development of tourism. The activities with the support of the Beautiful Bulgaria Project include restoration and renovation of the facades and roofs of a number of buildings in Peshtera, the reconstruction and building of sport facilities, children’s and sports playgrounds, access ways for disabled to and around the sites included in the project; the construction of a business centre; the development and amelioration of the infrastructure connecting the towns and villages. The construction of a modern landfill for waste treatment, which will be used by all 11 municipalities in the Pazardzhik District, is expected.
