In general the environment in Omourtag Municipality is in perfect condition. There are no large polluters of the air, soil and water in the Municipality. Its favorable geographic location and the preserved natural environment are conducive to the development of rural, hunting and fishing tourism. This is one of the major aspects for development. The region has large game reserves, some of the species in them being red deer, roe, hare and wild boar. The Municipality has forest and mountain huts. At a distance of 16 km from Omourtag town is Lissets Peak (1,130 m), where wonderful conditions for winter tourism exist. As a whole the environment in Omourtag is very appropriate for ecotourism.
The regional plan for ecotourism in the “North Black Sea coast and Northeast Balkan Range Mountain” Region is a part of National Ecotourism Strategy and “Conservation of biovariety and economic growth -2” National Action Plan. It is supported by the United States Agency for Intenational Development and Bulgarian Government. It is sent to all interested parties, which are offered to update their strategy plans and/or make new strategies that include aims and priorities considered with their work.Omourtag is one of those interested parties. It is very imoprtant for the municipal administration to include the ecotourism in municipality’s strategies for development of tourism as well as detached ecotourism strategies.
Omourtag Municipality has developed other startegic projects, which have been approved under different programs, such as: An energy efficiency project and a project for additional water supply of Omourtag town have been approved; Funding has been granted to a project for building a covered market for sale of agricultural produce; A number of sites of architectural, tourist and social importance have been approved for renovation under the Beautiful Bulgaria project. Approval and funding has been given to a large number of projects for building children's playgrounds, bus stops and renovation of Youth Centers; A project has been developed for supporting and training of unemployed young people; There is a project for improvement of the existing municipal roads of fifth-class in the area of Gerlovo village; Project proposals are being prepared for ecotourism and improvement of the infrastructure. Investments are sought for building refrigerator chambers for fruits and vegetables.
