Bansko
Bansko is spread over the most beautiful and majestic part of Pirin Mountain in the southwest of Bulgaria, near-by the Glazne River. It is located just 160 km. away of Sofia and 6 km. away of Razlog. The town has been built on the place of an old settlement, consecutively inhabited by Thracians, Romans, Byzantines and Slavs. The remains, that were found here, such as ancient fortresses and Thracian tumuli, as well as consecrated grounds, churches and chapels testify to several historical epochs. There are some remains of ancient fortresses, discovered in the Old Town site, which are situated about 4 km southwest, and in the Yulen place (along the Damianitsa River’s downstream). Thracian burial mounds have also been discovered close to this place, as well as some remnants of medicinal substances, a set of bronze surgical instruments, etc., which all date as back as   2nd Century A.D. The ruins of the late medieval St. George’s Church, and other monuments of culture, are found southeast of Bansko. In the middle of the 16th Century A.D., the town was mentioned in the Ottoman register of sheep-breeders under the name of Baniska. Until the 18th Century A.D.,  Bansko’s inhabitants had been mostly cattle-breeders and craftsmen, who relied on the vast pastures and rich woods for living. A great number of water mills, sawmills, fulling mills, workshops, etc. were built along the Glazne River’s downstream. Since an extensive market along the White Sea was available for the goods of wood, leather and iron, produced in Bansko, the town appeared to be amongst the best-developed ones for the time in Bulgaria. Bansko was in touch with the rich European culture, which had an extremely beneficial impact over the way of living of the town dwellers. 
              Nowadays, the town of Bansko is recognized as the best winter sports center in Bulgaria, and is a favorite ski & snowboard destination for many tourists, thanks to the excellent facilities built for these sports, along with the unique architecture and historical significance.
