The town is located 1036 m. above sea level in a valley along the two banks of the Stara Reka River. Until the 1st century B.C. when the Romans conquered the Balkan Peninsula, Northern Thrace and Western Rhodopes were inhabited by the warlike Thracian tribe named Bessae.
