Peshtera (population about 23,700) is a town, which attracts huge interest among the people looking to buy Bulgarian real estate and, especially, Bulgarian mountain property. The first traces of human presence in the area date from the Neolithic. The Thracian tribe of the Bessi inhabited the area in Antiquity and the settlement in the Peshtera Valley emerged in the fourth century BC.
The earliest piece of written evidence for the town's name dates from 1479, when Peshtera was part of the fief of a certain Mustafa in the Ottoman Empire. During the Bulgarian National Revival, many churches, bridges, fountains, schools and houses were built. The first secular school in Peshtera was opened in 1848, while the Nadezhda ('hope') community centre emerged in 1873. Many local residents took part in the armed struggle for the Liberation of Bulgaria, the town itself was liberated during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78 on 6 January.

Yubileyna Cave lies at 600 m. above sea level. Over 25 buildings have been declared monuments of culture: The Civil Rituals Hall, The Bulgarian-Russian Friendship Hall, Halil Mehmedov's Turkish house, the old Turkish school, the old clock, Razvitie "chitalishte" (arts, culture and literature center), the nunnery and other buildings in the region. St. Dimitar Church was recognized to be of national importance.

The construction of a modern refuse dump which will be used by all 11 municipalities in the Pazardzhik District, is expected.
