Assenovgrad (population over 40,000) is a picturesque town situated in the Plovdiv Region in the south of Bulgaria. When one is looking for property for sale in Bulgaria, they should explore closely the wide range of cheap Bulgarian properties in the area, which are intended to serve a number of purposes: Assenovgrad can be an ideal mountain property in Bulgaria; it can also be your favourite ski property in Bulgaria; or it could offer land for sale in Bulgaria, or you could benefit from land investment in Bulgaria, or, perhaps, it could be your rural property in Bulgaria. This beautiful property in Bulgaria is one of the sacred Bulgarian places and has extremely intriguing and rich historic past. Its former name Stanimaka was derived from the Greek “stenos” and “mahe” and refer to “might”, “strength”, and “power”. The Thracian tribes inhabiting the valley of the Maritsa River made Stanimaka their home and it was not until the 1st century BC when Stanimaka was occupied by the Romans and remained part of it for centuries until the 12th century AD. In 1230 Tzar Ivan Assen II fortified and expanded the existing Stanimaka Fortress and he ordered an inscription to be chiseled just above the entrance to the fortress and quite naturally both the fortress and the town were named after this Bulgarian ruler in 1934. During the period of the Ottoman domination Assenovgrad (a beautiful property in Bulgaria) continued to develop and in 1706 was described by the French physician and traveller Paul Lucas as “an important town with 12 churches and populated only by Christians who take pride in vine-growing and wine-making.” In the troublesome years of the Ottoman oppression Assenovgrad suffered a number of bloodshed raids and fires but managed to survive and keep its glory of the finest place within the Plovdiv Eparchy and the town spread and strengthened further on. The spirit of patriotism sparkled by Paiisi of Hilendar who settled in the area just before his death, was then spread by other patriots who were led by the most prominent freedom fighter of that time Backo Dincho. The Bulgarian Apostle of Freedom Vassil Levski put tremendous efforts in organizing the revolutionary committee headed by Otton Ivanov. The struggle for freedom of the Bulgarian patriots and the devastating reaction from the Ottoman troops with numerous atrocities did not go unnoticed by the super powers at that time. Eventually, in 1877 Russia declared war on the Ottoman Empire and in the following year of 1878 the San Stefano Peace Treaty was signed but only to leave the town of Assenovgrad and the surrounding area within the Ottoman Empire. This brought to another organized effort of the people of Assenovgrad who once again had to fight so that Assenovgrad could join the liberated Knyazhestvo of Bulgaria. The unification became a fact in 1885 and from then on Assenovgrad was able to develop freely and become an agricultural and trading centre of the area. Around this period in the history of this scenic property in Bulgaria, along with the traditional wine-making the people of Assenovgrad began cultivating tobacco and breeding silk worms to produce fine silk. Vine-growing with its century-long tradition has always occupied a major place in the economy of Assenovgrad and the wines “Mavroud” and “Pamid” have won numerous awards to their producers. The Mavroud is undoubtedly the most renowned wine variety of the Assenovgrad area and its rich and thick flavour has no other rivals of its kind. What is particularly notorious about this wine is that it is so smoothly thick and dense so that “you could carry it spread on a piece of cloth”. Alongside wine-making the people of Assenovgrad have mastered the making of brandy and vinegar and it is common for the Assenovgrad dwellers to have small barrels of both brandy and vinegar stored in their cellars. Other farming activities include sheep-breeding and cattle-breeding, breeding of silk worms, rice-growing, and tobacco-growing. The most widely grown fruit trees are pomegranates and figs. Oneof the oldest crafts in and around this beautiful property in Bulgaria has been the cooperage to cater for the wine-making industry. Since very early times this popular property in Bulgaria has had flour mills and in the past there used to be two types of flour mills: watermills and mills with millstones driven by oxen. In the 1870s factories to produce soap, rice, and paper were also opened.
The town of Assenovgrad cannot be separated from the nearby historic Assen’s Fortress situated just 2 km away from Assenovgrad on a steep rocky hillside and overlooking the Assenitsa River, which makes a sudden dramatic fall into a narrow gorge. The fortress itself lies on four terraces towering 130m above Assenovgrad and 100m above the river and it bears the main characteristics of the fortresses and fortifications typical for the 11-16th centuries. This citadel also contains the church of St Maria of Petrich which is dated from the 12th century and is a marvelous architectural and religious monument visited by thousands of tourists each year. Another remarkably attractive place near Assenovgrad, this picturesque property in Bulgaria, is the Belintash rocky formation, which is thought to have been the sanctuary of the ancient Thracian divinity of Sabaziy, later called Dionisius by the Greeks, just some 30km away from Assenovgrad. The area surrounding Assenovgrad, this spectacular property in Bulgaria, is abundant in beautiful natural spots and places and among them are the Red Wall Natural Reserve, the Topchika Cave, the Oussoikata Black-Pine Forest, the Lale Baiire(Tulip Hill), and the Little Isles.
