Borovets

Borovets is a smashing winter sports resort to visit and an attractive place to buy a Bulgarian property for prices of real estate in Bulgaria are still some of the lowest around.
Roundabout the turn of the last century, Prince Ferdinand of Bulgaria ordered himself three villas and a hunting lodge amongst the aromatic pinewoods covering the northern slopes of Mt. Mousala, 2,925 metres above sea level. Other wealthy people did likewise, founding an exclusive colony, Chamkoria, from which Borovets has developed. Borovets has become a major winter sports resort in recent years, increasingly geared towards package tourism. Set in the middle of ancient pine forests in a beautifully secluded spot on the edge of the magnificent Rila National Park, this charming winter resort is not only the first of all Bulgarian ski resorts, but is also the largest of all the ski resorts in Bulgaria having the most ski runs. Because Borovets is part of the Rila National Park and the government aim to preserve its charming magnetism and beauty and not let overdevelopment spoil the area, developments are very restricted compared to most resorts in Bulgaria and other countries. To make it a prime European holiday destination, there are plans to build a Super Borovets Project (estimated to be worth 300-400  million euros) to transfer Borovets into a mega resort including the nearby lively town of Samokov and the lovely large village of Beli Iskar.

Borovets is by far the best located of all Bulgarian winter resorts, just one hour down the road from Sofia and its international airport, and there are regular taxis and buses to the resort. Just 10km away is the town of Samokov which has all the essential facilities and a wide selection of cheap Bulgarian properties, from Bulgarian apartments and rural houses for sale in Bulgaria, mountain property Bulgaria and ski property Bulgaria, to land plots for sale in Bulgaria, land for sale in Bulgaria, and opportunities for land investment in Bulgaria.

Today Borovets is the biggest and most modern resort in Bulgaria. The climate is wonderful and healthy as winters are mild with an average temperature during the coldest month of January of 4.8ºC. The air is clear and fresh, and fragrant from the aromatic pinewoods. The genuine charm of Borovets can be felt during the winter mostly, since it is the time when the spectacular snow-white landscape is in perfect harmony and the excellent skiing facilities attract thousands of mountain lovers and skiers from both Bulgaria and abroad. The total length of all ski tracks is an impressive 45 km and skiers will find a good selection of runs in all difficulty levels, and all pistes are marked with multi-lingual signs. All pistes are kept in good condition and there are snowmaking facilities to ensure that runs are always in the best of condition possible.  There are three different skiing areas: Yastrebets, Markoudjik, and Sitnyakovo.

Yastrebets is the most popular as it has some of the best ski runs in the resort and excellent conditions. Moreover, the ride up to Yastrebets in one of the four-man cable cars will confront tourists with some of the most breathtaking scenery around. Skiers will be happy to set off skiing down the mountain to the bottom of the resort. Over the hill is located Markoudjik and starts at the highest point in Borovets (2600m) and, because of that, it has the longest skiing period of all three ski runs. With its great slopes Sitnyakovo is ideal for beginners and intermediaries to practice before they can move further up to the more challenging runs.
The resort is known as a regular host to various winter sports competitions and it has twice hosted World Cup competitions in Alpine skiing.
There is a biathlon track available in Borovets, and it is believed to be amongst the best in Europe. Skiers might as well test themselves on the cross-country piste far from the crowds.  Snowboarders will be happy to know that Borovets is probably the best resort in Bulgaria for snowboarding. There is a substantial half-pipe with a vertical drop of 320m to cater for both beginners and experienced enthusiasts. Night-skiing is another attraction in Borovets for those who wish to try the amazing night runs which are very well lit and seen from miles around. Borovets proudly boasts a number of quality ski schools with fully qualified instructors, all with very good English.
The village of Beli Iskar is situated as close as 7km to Borovets in the foothill of Rila Mountain. This lovely village attracts tourists with its stunning scenery. Special events, such as folksongs and dance performances, tasting of local delicacies and presentations of local customs and crafts are organized for the guests in the village. Daytime activities include horseback riding in the mountains and fishing trips to various locations. The village is very popular with home owners.
