There are many historical documents discovered which testify that Chirpan was based at this place in the early 15th century.  The town is well noted for its revolutionary past and rich cultural inheritance. This land has inspired a number of famous Bulgarian poets, artists and musicians, most notably the violin player Emil Kamilarov, the poet Pavel Matev, the folk singer Atanaska Todorova. The town is the birthplace of Peyo Yavorov, one of Bulgaria’s greatest poets, who enriched Bulgarian literature with the magic of his words. Each year Chirpan pays homage to the poet’s talent and celebrates Yavorov’s Days in January. At present, Yavorov’s home is a museum. It preserves unique documents, photos and objects, related to Yavorov’s lifetime. It is connected, through a common yard, with Nikola Manev’s Picture Gallery. The building, whichgives shelter to the works of the famous Bulgarian artist, is also a typical example of the architectural style of Plovdiv from the middle of 19th century. Recently a cultural forum was established in Chirpan, which attracts more and more new art-lovers; it is called Festival of the Free Spirit and is organized by Nikola Manev’s Picture Gallery. The musicians, who come to join the Thracian Summer Festival, turn it into an expected and much appreciated event. Nowadays, Chirpan remains a magical area of rhymes, colours and music to prove the strong and creative spirit of the Bulgarians. The region has a rich ancient history evidenced by the Karasura archeological excavations, located north-east of the town, where some findings dating back from the prehistoric times (5-4 millennium B.C.) to the Medieval crusades have been found. An interesting cultural monument is the Ethnographic House in the village of Spasovo.
