The area around the modern town has been inhabited since the Neolithic. Part of Justinian’s defensive system in the 6th century, the region gained importance as part of the First Bulgarian Kingdom due to the proximity to the capitals Pliska and Preslav and the passes of Stara Planina (the Balkan Mountains).
The first written evidence of the modern town dates from the 17th century, when it was mentioned as the kaza centre Osman Pazar in Ottoman tax registers. The settlement was a centre of crafts and trade. Osman Pazar was liberated from Ottoman rule on 27 January 1878 by Russian troops under Johann Casimir Ehrnrooth during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78. Omurtag acquired its present name in 1934, named after Bulgarian Khan Omurtag.
There are deposits of salt in the vicinity. Several eco-trails have been established in the region, which pass through beautiful sites, along rivers, historical monuments, and chalets. The Roman Bridge is situated some 60 km south-west of Turgovishte, which is chosen by many foreigners to purchase a wonderful Bulgarian real estate, between the villages of Vidanovo and Malko Dolyane, beyond the Stara River. Despite its name it does not date back to Roman times, it was built in 16th-17th century. It is 60 m long, 4 m wide with a height of 10 m. It has the shape of a crescent with one central arc and five smaller ones. It was built directly on the natural rock. This unique structure is completely preserved; it fascinates with the exquisiteness of its architecture. In ancient times it was an important strategic road. Nearby the village of Stevrek is situated, which is one of the most desired localities for Bulgarian properties to acquire.
The History Museum offers exhibitions in three fields- archaeology, ethnography and general history. They are in eight halls. The archaeology exhibition shows prehistoric exhibits. The ethnography represents urban and village life in the region. The general historical exhibition displays the development of the city from the 17th century to the end of the 19th century.
