The town of Elhovo is located on the left bank of the Tundja river, in the southeastern part of the Thracian Plain, between the Strandja and Sakar mountains, 38 km from the town of Yambol. To the southwest it borders on the Haskovo district, to the east – on the Bolyarovo municipality, to the southeast on the Republic of Turkey, to the north – on the Tundja municipality. Elhovo is a town located in the lower Tundja river valley.
The favorable natural settings enabled people to inhabit the area in the very early ages of 6000 - 4000 BC, evidence of which are the discovered from that time period copper and iron tools and the hand made ceramic items decorated with cut-in ornaments. In the early Medieval Age the town was known as Ioanitsa, later in the 7th century AD, its name was transformed by the arriving Slavonic tribes to Yanitsa. For the first time the town of Elhovo joined the territory of the Bulgarian state during the rule of Khan Krum (803-814) and this event was memorized in the inscription discovered nearby in the present village of Malomirovo Hambarly.
In 1373 the town was captured by the Ottoman Turks, which marked the beginning of the darkest period in its history - the 500–year Ottoman yoke. The Russian soldiers freed the town from the Turks in 1878. The town and its inhabitants were engaged in the early 20th century wars, which Bulgaria waged for its full liberation.
The town gradually established itself as an administrative and economic centre in the following years. Its Turkish name Kazalagach of the Ottoman rule was replaced with the Bulgarian name Elhovo and it was legally acknowledged as a town with Decree № 86 of 18 Мarch 1925.
In the middle and late 20th century the town gradually changed its image, growing more and more into a prosperous leading administrative center.
Elhovo municipality falls into the range of two climatic areas - the North-Tundja Area (transitional continental) and the Sakar-Stranja Area (transitional Mediterranean, with soft winters, warm springs and dry and hot summers).
